Community Involvement

Glenmede was founded in 1956 by four children of Joseph N. Pew to serve as trustee of the Pew family's charitable interests. “The Pew family’s legacy of philanthropic involvement is more than a tradition,” stated J.N. Pew, IV, M.D. in 2008. “It is a living heritage that thrives in Glenmede’s culture and is expressed through its commitments to the communities where we do business.”

For Glenmede, our offices are more than business locations, they are part of the communities where we invest our time, passion, and financial support. Over the years, our institutional and individual community contributions have supported causes ranging from arts and education to health and social services.

Over the years, Glenmede has supported a variety of organizations dedicated to improving the quality of education in Philadelphia public schools. In addition, our staff has made numerous volunteer and leadership contributions to organizations such as:

  • Community College of Philadelphia Foundation—the private funding development arm of the Community College of Philadelphia. Al Piscopo, former Glenmede CEO, serves on the Board.
  • Philadelphia Futures—provides promising, urban high school students with the tools needed to achieve their dream of a college education. Laura Williamson, our COO, serves on the Board.
  • White Williams Scholars—encourages high academic achievement in Philadelphia public high school students of limited financial resources. Gordon Fowler, our President and CEO, serves on the Board.
  • City Year—a year-long community service and leadership development program that turns young people aged seventeen to twenty-four into empowered citizens and engaged leaders serving in Philadelphia-based schools and neighborhoods. Glenmede sponsors teams based in Philadelphia neighborhood schools. In addition, Matt Cross, First Vice President and Relationship Manager, and a dozen Glenmede colleagues serve as career mentors working one-on-one with CityYear Corps members.
